Type “free education in Sweden” into a search bar and you will land on dozens of upbeat articles. Hardly any of them mention the detail that decides everything for you: tuition-free study mostly applies to citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland.
Holding a Pakistani passport usually means paying tuition for a Swedish degree, yet the bill is not identical at every institute. A humanities, social science or law course at Stockholm University costs SEK 90,000 per year, whereas universities elsewhere price technology and science courses much higher. Locating affordable universities in Sweden for international students is mainly a matter of choosing wisely.
If you plan to study in Sweden, you need precise numbers. We took every figure here from an official university or government page in October 2026, and we label simple sums as ours. Treat this page as a cost map for anyone who wants to study in Sweden from Pakistan.

The Main Points at a Glance
- Pakistani students usually pay tuition. Sweden waives it for EU/EEA and Swiss citizens, and a few exemption groups exist.
- Official examples run from SEK 90,000 per year at Stockholm University to SEK 155,000 per year at Skövde.
- On top of tuition you pay SEK 900 to apply and SEK 1,500 for the permit, and you must prove access to SEK 10,656 each month (2026 figure).
- Universities often show master’s fees as a total for the whole programme, so always check whether a number is per year or overall.
Is Study in Sweden Free for Pakistani Students? What You Really Pay
Students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland normally pay both an application fee and tuition. Some are exempt, for example doctoral students at Örebro University, and each university publishes its own exemption rules, so read yours. In practice, “affordable” means a cheaper subject area, a university with moderate fees and, where you can win one, a scholarship.
Amounts come from Stockholm University’s fee page, University Admissions and the Swedish Migration Agency. They change over time, so recheck them before you apply.
Affordable Universities in Sweden for International Students: Fees Compared
No single institute is the cheapest for everybody, because the price shifts with your subject and level. Start by learning how universities quote fees:
Per year
- The cost of one academic year (60 credits)
- A 2-year master’s means paying it twice
Total
- The cost of the whole programme
- A 1-year master’s total equals one year
- You pay tuition semester by semester, in advance
| University | Fee (SEK) | Per Year or Total | What the Fee Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stockholm University | 90,000 or 140,000 | Per year | 90,000 for humanities, social science and law; 140,000 for sciences |
| Uppsala University | 228,000 to 300,000 | Total | 2-year master’s examples: Sociology 228,000; Computer Science 300,000 |
| University of Skövde | 110,000 or 155,000 | Per year | 2026/27 programmes: lower for humanities, law and social science; higher for technology, health and design |
| Örebro University | 121,600 | Total | 1-year master’s in Strategic Communication; other programmes differ |
| Malmö University | 110,000 to 195,000 | Total | 1-year master’s. A 2-year master’s is 220,000 to 430,000 in total; bachelor’s 325,000 to 520,000 in total |
| Dalarna University | 96,000 to 300,000 | Total | Examples: Economics (1-year master’s) 96,000; Data Science (2-year) 300,000 |

How Master’s Students Can Work Out Total Tuition
Multiply the yearly fee by the number of years (this is our own calculation, not an official figure). A 2-year humanities master’s at SEK 90,000 per year comes to SEK 180,000, and a 2-year science programme at SEK 140,000 per year comes to SEK 280,000. It is plain arithmetic on the published yearly fees. Your programme page shows the exact total, and on University Admissions you can find it under “show more”.

Tuition is only one item on the list. This is the order in which money leaves your account when you plan to study in Sweden from Pakistan:
- Application fee, SEK 900. You pay it to University Admissions for processing, for every semester you apply to.
- First tuition instalment. You pay it to your university in advance. You must settle it before you apply for a permit, because you only become fully admitted once you pay it.
- Residence permit fee, SEK 1,500. You pay it to the Swedish Migration Agency: SEK 1,500 for adults and SEK 750 for children under 18. The agency does not return it if it refuses the application.
- Proof of living funds, SEK 10,656 a month. This is evidence, not a fee, and it is the minimum for 2026 applications. A spouse adds SEK 4,440 and each child SEK 2,664. Show it with a bank statement that your bank issued within four months of your start date, or with a scholarship or sponsor letter.
- Health cover. If your studies last under a year, you need comprehensive health insurance. If they last a year or longer, the Migration Agency advises registering in Sweden’s population register, which opens access to health and dental care. Registration is its own step with its own conditions, so confirm that you qualify.
Budgeting Errors to Avoid
Do not assume tuition is free. Do not pay SEK 900 across a long list of programmes without a shortlist. Do not forget that tuition is due before the permit application. And do not pick a course only because it is cheap if it does not fit your degree or career plan.
How to Lower the Cost of Studying in Sweden: 4 Proven Strategies
1. Pick the right subject price band
Within the same university, the subject sets the price: SEK 110,000 versus 155,000 per year at Skövde, and SEK 90,000 versus 140,000 at Stockholm University.
2. Compare programme lengths
A 1-year master’s can cost half as much as a 2-year one. Malmö lists 1-year master’s programmes from SEK 110,000 in total and 2-year ones from SEK 220,000.
3. Apply for scholarships early
Mid Sweden University’s tuition scholarship covered 75% of tuition for eligible non-EU applicants to listed autumn programmes in its 2026 call, so check whether it runs again for 2027. At Skövde, the university subtracts any scholarship you receive from your tuition invoice. The Swedish Institute runs its own scholarship with a list of eligible countries, so look at si.se to see whether you qualify. You can also read our guide to scholarships in Sweden for Pakistani students.
4. Choose a course with strong career prospects
A lower fee only pays off when the degree leads somewhere. Compare the best courses to study in Sweden for Pakistani students before you decide.

Work Rights and Family Permits for Students in Sweden
Bachelor’s and master’s students may work up to 15 hours a week on permits granted on or after 11 June 2026. The limit does not apply to work that forms part of your education or to work during June, July and August. After two completed semesters you may work more, unless you apply for a new permit for studies below doctoral level. Working beyond 15 hours can lead the agency to withdraw your permit or refuse an extension.
Part-time jobs help with daily costs but will not cover tuition, so settle your funds first. Spouses, partners and children under 18 can apply alongside you, and new family rules take effect from 1 October 2026, so read them before you apply. The full conditions are in our Sweden study visa requirements for Pakistani students guide.
